    It's Team Oso!

    It's Team Oso!

OK, so we’re not a team, per say, since the Tour Divide is strictly a solo event, but my best bud Paul Barrera is officially racing the Tour Divide alongside me, and just for fun, we have dubbed ourselves Team Oso!

“Oso” is Spanish for “bear,” and Paul graciously suggested the name in honor of my great, fallen friend, James “Bear” Sparks. Before he passed away, I told Bear about this ride, and he just looked at me like I was nuckin’ futs. But, as I he knew he would, he fully supported my crazed desire to race. Now, he will be the spirit behind our transnational romp as Paul and I seek to arrive in Antelope Wells, New Mexico together.

Why not help us achieve our quest!

And just for grins, here are some other names we considered before simplifying. Feel free to use them for your team!

    Dos Amigos Locos

    Bikepackin’ Brosephs

    Lords of the Chainrings

    Dude, Where’s My Butt Cream

    Crank Addicts

    Dass Right, We Packin’

    Saddle Tramps

    Spin Doctors

    Our Moms Said We’re Special

    Beer Lords

    Lords of Dog-Tired Town

And also a couple that I really liked that I want to keep to myself for the moment.  If you ask real nice maybe I’ll tell ya.  ;)

    Team Oso rocks!

UPDATE – 11/19/09: The most difficult thing about racing the Tour Divide is getting to the starting line. As I continually find out as I prepare for the race, one must sacrifice SO much to fulfill this dream. Money, time with family, relationships with friends, yummy (fatty) foods…your entire life is strained. For countless people, the pressures are too much. They must bail on the dream before they can even really start.

My buddy Paul Barrera has succumbed to the pressures of “normal” life, and will no longer be racing the TD.

But there is another. From the ashes he rose, and he dares to dream. He is Pat Smith, a fellow Texas flatlander who is even more of a noobie than me. We have been training together, sharing research, and basically obssessing over everything TD. Although he is still not 100% certain that he will make the start (pesky “real-life” again), he is going forth as though he will.

    Rock on Pat!
