Well if you followed me during the TD, you already know I had to drop out in Lincoln, Montana.  As you can imagine, I am extremely disappointed, especially after spending a little chunk of my life training, focusing, and throwing a small fortune at this dream of mine.  However, I had a great time in Canada and in northern Montana, and I met some great cyclists and learned many valuable lessons.  I will be sharing the story with you over the coming weeks, and if you are an aspiring TD’er, especially a flatlander like myself, I believe I can offer you a wealth of advice that may help you in your own quest, whether you seek to race or merely tour the divide.

So check back over the next few weeks and I’ll give you a day by day blow of my short lived account.  Thanks to everyone who offered their support, their generous donations, and their words of encouragement as I pursued this quest.  It meant so much to me to know I had fans, friends, and family tracking me out there.  I wish so much that I could have done better…knowing what I know now, I could probably make a better run in the future, but its just not in the cards, at least not right now.

Good luck to the remaining racers…keep on rockin’ until you see the border!

    • You’re a [small] hero of mine, Tony. Even if you didn’t finish. I’m in Waco and want to do the TD this next year, maybe the year after. I’d love to visit with you some time about where and how you trained here in Texas – er, maybe I should seek advice elsewhere :P

I was truly sad to hear your called-it-quits mtbcast, but I must confess that I was a little relieved to know that the title of first Texan finisher was still up for grabs.

I’m in houston pretty often to see family (Meyerland and Kingwood areas) if you ever wanted to meet and chat. You have my email address now, I suppose.

      Maybe next year?

    • Hey Tony. I was gutted to hear your mtbcast message, but I can only imagine how tough this little race is. My training has begun, 2012 here I come! I would be very interested indeed in any pearls of wisdom from somone who’s been there.

Well done for getting as far as you did. Not many people can say they would even attempt such an event, let alone get through a week of it. All the best. Mark.

      Tony,
I stumbled upon your blog just a few days prior to TD start. WOW, you’ve got balls man! I’ve been cycling in Alaska for 13 years and have a small handful of endurance achievements under my chamois, but still don’t consider myself prepared for such an undertaking. Currently shooting for 2012. Your story is an inspiration and a week on that route is an incredible accomplishment. Can’t wait to hear the rest of your story. Who knows, maybe we’ll find ourselves in Banff, front tires pointing south, in 2012.
      Thanks for sharing,
      C

    • Joseph, Mark, Chuck, thanks so much for the kind words. I’m very glad that my story has inspired you, and I hope you make your 2012 bids. You never know, I may be there as well. Time will tell! I hope to get a couple race diary entries written this week, and you can rest assured I will include all the nuggets of TD wisdom I gleaned from this experience. Take care guys!

    • Tony,
Great job, man. I can’t wait to here about the adventure. You made a hell of a run at it,being from down here in hot, flat Southeast Texas and venturing into that terrain, mountains and cold. Finishing is overrated. I hear New Mexico is lame. You saw the most picturesque places on the route, tasted their brew, then got back home. Not a bad race, in my mind. The GDR aint goin nowhere anyways, and you have all the gear now…..hahaha

      Cheers

    • Tony,

You put in a great effort man and you made it through Canada, which is some of the hardest stuff on the route. It was good riding with you for a bit and even though each of our adventures were shorter than our hopes, new trails lie ahead. I know you’ll keep rolling.

Best of luck on all your rides. I hope we’ll meet up on some trails again some time soon.

back home in Issaquah WA, resting up and getting ready for whatever is next.

    • Great Job, Vato! I was proud to be part of your “training” team! I think we need to ride soon!!!

    • Hey Tony,

I know how you feel man, I scratched myself. Kind of been thinking lately that I quit to early. Like to give it another shot. What about you?
